How to Set Up an Outdoor Bar With a Refrigerator
An outdoor bar with a refrigerator is the centrepiece of a good patio or alfresco space: cold drinks within reach and no trips inside. Setting one up well comes down to choosing the right fridge, putting it in the right place and giving it power and cover.
Step 1: Pick the right outdoor fridge
Choose a fridge listed for outdoor or alfresco installation with a tropical rating. Our alfresco and outdoor bar fridges range from 129 to 248 litres, and every model is tropical rated. Options include:
- Rhino GSP1H-SS: a 138 litre outdoor bar fridge listed for keeping beers cold in 40°C temperatures.
- Rhino ENV1R-SS: a 148 litre ENVY single door in 316 marine grade stainless steel.
- Rhino ENV2H-SS: a 248 litre double door ENVY for a bigger bar.
For a smaller footprint, the Schmick HUS-SC70-SS is a tropical, triple glazed 70 litre glass door model.
Step 2: Plan the position
- Under cover: keep the fridge out of direct rain, sprinklers and full midday sun.
- Built in or freestanding: for a built in outdoor bar fridge cabinet, choose a front-breathing model and measure the opening. Read our built in bar fridge guide.
- Height and width: the ENVY and GSP models stand around 840 to 865 mm high, so check them against your bar bench.
Step 3: Power and safety
An outdoor fridge needs a suitable power point. Have outdoor power installed or checked by a licensed electrician, and follow the manufacturer instructions for the fridge.
Step 4: Think about the whole bar
- A bench or serving area close to the fridge.
- Space to store glasses and mixers.
- Shade and airflow so the fridge does not work harder than it needs to.
Which size?
A 70 litre unit suits a small bar. A 138 to 148 litre fridge handles regular entertaining, and a 248 litre double door suits a large crowd. For help with the climate rating, read why tropical-rated bar fridges matter.
Outdoor bar FAQs
Can I use a normal bar fridge outside?
It is not recommended. Choose a model listed for outdoor or alfresco installation.
Does an outdoor bar fridge need ventilation?
Yes. Leave the ventilation clearance listed by the manufacturer, or choose a front-breathing model for built in installation.
What is the best outdoor bar fridge?
It depends on size and budget. Compare options in our outdoor kitchen fridge guide.
A quick planning checklist
Before you buy, confirm that the fridge is listed for outdoor or alfresco installation, that you have a covered spot out of direct rain, and that the opening and ventilation space match the specifications. Then plan power with a licensed electrician and think about the benchtop and storage around the fridge.
